What is 0-10V and 1-10V dimming?

In concept, 0-10 Volt dimming is one of the oldest and, in some ways, most simplistic form of dimming, it is a lighting control technique that enables you to adjust the brightness of a light source by regulating the voltage supplied to it. Using a DC voltage range from zero to ten volts, this type of control signal allows the lighting system to adjust its output proportionally.

0-10V dimming is an analog lighting control protocol. At its maximum voltage level, typically 10V, the light achieves its full brightness, while at its lowest voltage level, typically 0V, it reaches its lowest dimming level. At the same time, 1-10V dimming creates a range of voltage between 1 and 10 volts DC, with the highest intensity being 10V (100%) and the lowest being 1V (10%).

The versatility of this technique means that it provides a smooth and seamless operation, allowing the light output to be dimmed down to very low levels, sometimes reaching as low as 0.1%. This flexible approach to lighting control is ideal for creating various lighting atmospheres, making it an excellent choice for settings such as bars and restaurants where the ambience is essential. Put simply, with 0-10V dimming, the minimum voltage level required to activate the dimming signal is zero volts, while with 1-10V dimming, the minimum voltage level required is one volt. Here are the main differentiating factors between the two protocols.

0-10V dimming:

Voltage range: In a 0-10V dimming system, the voltage signal used for control ranges from 0 to 10 volts. This essentially means that the signal begins at 0 volts, indicating that the lowest level of brightness is achieved when no voltage is applied. As the voltage gradually increases from 0V to 10V, the light output brightens progressively, with 10V usually signifying full brightness.

Minimum Brightness: The primary feature of 0-10V dimming is its ability to lower light output to complete darkness, as the signal begins at zero volts. This makes it ideal for scenarios that demand complete blackout capability.

Applications: 0-10V dimming is commonly employed in situations that require comprehensive dimming capabilities, ranging from complete darkness to full brightness. This encompasses a range of settings, including theaters, cinemas, and certain commercial spaces that demand precise light management.

1-10V Dimming:

Voltage Range: In a 1-10V dimming system, the control voltage signal spans from 1 to 10 volts. This indicates that the dimming signal initiates at 1V, signifying the lowest level of brightness. As the voltage surges from 1V to 10V, the luminosity consistently amplifies, with 10V usually matching complete brightness.

Minimum Brightness: The 1-10V dimming method falls short in delivering complete darkness as the signal commences at 1V. Hence, it isn't suitable for environments that demand full blackout.

Applications: The 1-10V dimming method is extensively employed in a vast array of applications such as domestic lighting, commercial lighting, and industrial lighting. This dimming technique is highly versatile and energy-efficient, providing accurate control over lighting levels.


What are the features of 0-10V lighting control protocols?

1. It is analog— The lighting adjusts in accordance with voltage variances that are supervised.

2. Hardwired— Because each fixture has its wiring, the installation process for an extensive and sophisticated lighting control system can be quite complex.

3. Unidirectional— The signal transmitted from the dimming driver to the LED driver or fluorescent ballast is one-way. It resembles digital systems in that there is no feedback data available for monitoring the light's performance, as the signal does not travel in reverse.

4. Limited capacity— A 0-10V system can handle approximately ten light fixtures per controller.
